Ever felt a laptop is too bulky to take to a tournament for some preparation during intervals? Or simply do not wish to go into deep analysis during tournament breaks but just need to skim through your preparations. Then ‘Chessbase Online’ is the perfect software for you.
This article provides a brief introduction to the new software launched by Chessbase for Android devices. Of course it is not a bad buy just for Rs. 580.

What is Chessbase Online?
It’s an application for Android mobile devices that you can use to access the Chassbase online game database to get details on opening lines and related statistics. While a Chessbase app was there for i-phone for sometime, the android version was long awaited till its launch in last December. As an Android app it has a rating of 4 out of 5 indicating that it’s considerably well received.

Features
Even though Chessbase Online does not have a chess engine, it provides number of useful features which are convenient on a mobile device.
1) Online Game Database
According to Chessbase, this online database contains more than 5 million games from approximately 270,000 players. In addition it is updated on a weekly basis providing essential recent developments. The database access is extremely fast & it’s almost like having a local database. It does not necessarily need a high speed 3G/HSPA connection, it works quite fast in GPRS/EDGE connections as well.
2) Commented Master Games
Chessbase Online provides a local database of 500 annotated games of world class players spanning from 1857 to 2011.
3) Opening search
Opening Search is one of the most powerful features in this software. A quick scan through on opening lines can be done with related statistics. This feature is well suited for refreshing the memory on prepared openings. Further, it allows to search for games in given positions.
4) pgn file creation & replay
Chessbase Online allows to create, replay and modify pgn files. It also allows sharing pgn files directly via email applications such as yahoo mail and gmail or skype. This is one of the features we at chesslife.lk extensively use.
In summary
It is true that Chessbase Online does not provide most of the powerful feature like its PC counterpart. Many users at the Android market have suggested adding a chess engine and some improved statistics.
However for a mobile device it is handy as a start. I believe Chessbase will add more features to the app in future.
How to buy it?
The app can be downloaded by the Android market. Cost will be around Rs. 580.00 [5.18 USD]. Payments can be made from Credit/Debit cards via Google wallet.
